Medicare administrator Tavenner testifies amid criticism of HealthCare.gov rollout

Top Medicare and Medicaid administrator Marilyn Tavenner made another appearance to testify on Capitol Hill on Tuesday as the Obama administration continues to battle back against criticisms of its health care exchange website.

Among other concerns, Reuters reported that a government memo showed that the site was at “high risk” before open enrollment began on Oct. 1. The memo recommended that a security team be created to monitor the site, and that the recommendation was approved by Tavenner, who is the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, according to Reuters.

Tuesday’s appearance before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee was titled “The Online Federal Health Insurance Marketplace: Enrollment Challenges and the Path Forward.”

A government spokeswoman told Reuters that steps have been taken to resolve the security issues, and that user data has not been threatened.

Tavenner insisted on Oct. 29 that the glitch-ridden site was working and would eventually function at full strength.

“I want to apologize to you that the website has not worked as well as it should,” Tavenner said at the end of October.

“This HealthCare.gov site is fixable,” she added. “The system is working. It’s just not working as smoothly and consistently as we want.”
