A church bus traveling from North Carolina overturned Wednesday in Jefferson County, Tenn., killing at least eight people and shutting down both directions of Interstate 40, authorities told NBC News.

In addition to the deaths, there were also multiple injuries, the state Highway Patrol said.

Little further information was immediately available, but Jefferson County emergency management officials told NBC News that five medical helicopters were at the scene of the crash, on I-40 near Jefferson City. At least 20 ambulances were also dispatched.

The Highway Patrol said three vehicles were involved in the crash about 2 p.m. ET — the bus, a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle. The bus, which was traveling east, crossed the median and struck the two other vehicles, overturning the bus and setting the tractor-trailer on fire, it said.
