Union Square in downtown San Francisco was evacuated Thursday after a suspicious package was discovered, KTVU said.
The device was reported in Union Square, at the intersection of Powell and Stockton streets, around 11:50 a.m. PST, San Francisco police said. The city's bomb squad was examining the package around 1 p.m., the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
All of Union Square, a 2.6-acre plaza and major tourist destination, has been evacuated, and a one-block radius around the square has been closed to vehicles and pedestrians.
Staff at businesses the area have been advised to “shelter in place,” authorities said.
