Four arrested in London on suspicion of terrorism

By Keir Simmons, Richard Esposito and Alexander Smith, NBC News

LONDON - Armed officers arrested four men on suspicion of terrorism-related offenses late Sunday, police said.

The men were detained in three raids across the U.K. capital Sunday evening in what police called a “pre-planned intelligence-led operation.”

They are being held on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism, police said in a statement.

Police described the arrests as a "disruption" of a terror group which was of a "lower level" than other past cases, but gave no more information about the alleged offenses.

The men were early Monday still being held in a south London police station while officers carried out searches at six addresses across the city.

The raids happened at about 7.10 p.m. local time Sunday (2.10 p.m. ET). Two men were arrested in Mansell Street, east London, one in Westbourne Grove, in the Notting Hill area, and the fourth in Peckham, in the southeast of the city, police said.
